Review Mortal Prey, Another Prey Novel by John Sandford
Time to Review Mortal Prey, A John Sandford Prey Novel
As I closed the book, I knew it was time to review Mortal Prey, number thirteen in the John Sandford prey series of novels. I read most all of them long ago, but last Christmas, I gathered the collection and sent it on to my oldest grandson.
Well…
That got me started again, so I looked on line and repurchased an up-to-date collection of the Prey novel series. Been working on it for one year now, off and on, and in between working on my own science fiction short stories, novels and articles. Now, having put down Mortal Prey, I am compelled to share my views on this tale.
Why Review Mortal Prey And Not The Other Prey Novels
Some stories really move the action. When the high-energy anger of a purpose-focused killer Clara Rinker runs head-on into the extraordinary luck of special detective Lucas Davenport, bullets will fly.
It began years earlier when a younger Rinkler was still an unknown under the FBI’s most wanted list. Enter Davenport who eventually uncovers the identity of the unknown killer. That knowledge almost costs him his life. But in the end, Davenport survives, as does Rinker. Clara flees and the killing spree ends.
For a while the FBI, Davenport and those who enjoy reading the Prey Novel series forget her. Then she returns, and she is more deadly and determined than ever. Thus I review Mortal Prey.

Now I don’t plan on giving away the story. Such reviews are not fun to read. But I can tell you that there is much tragedy, for the FBI, Davenport and friends, and you, dear reader. You will share in Rinker’s distorted sense of justice, friendship and revenge. You will also experience her near superstitious perception of Davenport’s luck.
Just when you think you have the answer to the next twist in the plot, you find yourself blindsided by the obvious.
Review Mortal Prey, Things I Like About The Prey Novels
As in all the Prey Novel series, John Sandford has the perfect ear for authentic dialogue that runs the course of intermingled humor, focused detective discussions, family events and drama. Old friends come back on the scene. New friends also abound. And I would not bother to review Mortal Prey were it not laced with real characters that talk, act and behave with believable emotions and reactions.
In the works of John Sandford, good people are not always good and wicked people are not always wicked. You will love Clara Rinker even as you despise some of her deeds and actions.
Review Mortal Prey, Things I Dislike About The Prey Novels
My one great complaint about the Prey Novel series… Great writers like John Sandford should not need to fill their work with all the cursing. This is the one thing wherein nearly all of his characters suffer. Almost everyone lacks verbal skill. And this, my dear reader, is a sad failure in the craft. Thus:
- If you dislike cursing in your reading materials, the Prey Novels may not be for you. If you
- If you can endure cursing but lack the ability to shift your memory into neutral, the Prey Novels will likely expand on your foul language vocabulary.
At any rate, I hope you get something out of this Mortal Prey review. Perhaps even a desire to read the book and the series. If you enjoy tales of great thriller detective action, you will enjoy the Prey series.
