Where To Shim A Hinge Using Business Card Materials
Over a course of time, an entrance door can sag and stick when opening and closing. Though various other causes may be in effect, this is often a problem that is related to a loose of weakened hinge. The basic solution involves a simple process of shimming the appropriate hinge(s) in the correct places. Here is the quick fix for an unevenly gapped entrance door:
- Looking at the door on the edge that is nearest to the doorknob, confirm that the gap at the top between door and jam is wider than the gap at the bottom between door and jam.
- Open the door.
- Check to confirm that all hinges are currently screwed tight and secure.
- Tighten any loose screws, and then recheck the door gap. If the gap still exists, proceed with the final steps of this repair sequence.
- Locate a standard business card.
- Measure the length of the door hinges.
- Using a standard utility knife cut the business card into several ½” wide strips and to a length that is slightly less than that of your door hinges.
- Using a standard, #3 Phillips screwdriver, loosen the top door hinge on the side that mounts to the door jam.
- Shift the barrel of the hinge forward, toward the door handle.
- Slip two or three of the business card strips in back of the hinge nearest to the barrel.
- Retighten the hinge.
- Adjust with more or less strips to make a best fit.
